Research Visit - Southmead Hospital,
Bristol
A train journey to Bristol in early September resulted in a fascinating and enjoyable
meeting with Christina Shewell, who amongst other things, works as
a speech and language therapist in the Speech and Language Unit at
Southmead Hospital. I was led by Christina on an absorbing and instructive
journey through the field of voice from several aspects - clinical,
psychological, practical and commercial - and it only served to reinforce
the vastness of the topic and the need to constantly check the terms
of reference for my research.
Christina was Head of the Speech and Language Department at Addenbrookes
Hospital in the 1980's and then incorporated a step outside the |
medical
environment to add self-employed work to her busy schedule. This work
encompasses helping theatre groups, actors, commercial businesses,
radio and television presenters and industry in the effective use
of the voice and training others in the assessment of the voice. Christina
can be heard broadcasting frequently and often reviews books on TV
and radio. She also regularly presents conference papers and is currently
engaged on writing a book that takes the voice as a psychosomatic
phenomenon and considers the role of psychological effects on the
voice across all disciplines.
